New Research Leading to Breath-Based Diagnostics reports Stream Diagnostics

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 11, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia- A new method for diagnosing diseases with nothing more than a patient’s breath is being researched closely by medical professionals and researchers.

Doctors of bygone centuries have been connecting distinctive breath with disease, but even in the new age of hi-tech ways of detecting diseases the old standard has found new life.

The process is just as simple as it sounds, as a new tool wielding an array of sensors to detect diseases through breath. According to the Wall Street Journal, the results are considered positive. Some methods seem to involve tagging material that will react with particular chemicals the body creates to form distinctive odor during exhaling. Other forms are simply fine-tuned in order to detect compounds found in normal breathing patterns.

The Wall Street Journal’s Melinda Beck explains the process: Every individual has a unique breath signature—like a fingerprint—that contains not only oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide but also volatile organic compounds. Those chemicals from inside and outside the body evaporate at room temperature and are the source of most breath odors. … Exhaled breath also contains a host of "confounders" inhaled from the ambient air—including molecules of pollution, paint, furniture, even carpet fibers—that can interfere with breath sampling.

Some may wonder, “Do we really have paint on our breath? No wonder Listerine was once marketed as a floor cleaner.” But in all seriousness, the breath test does truly detect the contents of one’s health.

At Cleveland Clinic’s Repertory Institute, there have been tests run to utilize electronic noise detection to locate the presence of lung cancer. A publish study noted that a particular sensor was capable of detecting cancer with an 80% accuracy rating. The fact does point to a previously held scientific finding that some dogs seem to sense cancer in patients before they know they are afflicted with the disease.

The creation of the device is not only useful in the standard sense, but also can come as great comfort for those who have a phobia of needles, and thus may not seek testing when they ought to.

University of California, Davis Professor Cristina Davis spoke on the once-considered science fiction becoming a reality: "The Holy Grail is the Star Trek Tricorder concept, where you would breathe into a device and a sign would pop up saying what health problems you have."
