Pakistani Hospitals are Without Qualified Radiologists at Hospitals reports Imaging At Olympic Park

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 12, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia -- It has become surprisingly difficult to fill the position of radiologist in recent years, as three major teaching hospitals are finding out the hard way.

Top positions for radiology department slots have been vacant for the last 10 months.

Besides the three vacant positions, unavailability of qualified radiologists worsened the problems for both patients and staff. Over 25 positions, including assistant professors, registrars, and medical officers, are still vacant at the radiology department.

Both public and private hospitals rely heavily on radiology departments as patient care concept is both directly and indirectly based upon radiological services. Many surgical interventions, including MRI, CT Scans, and digital and X-Ray forms, rely on accurate radiological investigations.

The lacks of individuals manning the costly machinery cause the departments to function in violation of regulations accorded by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

The head of the Jinnah Hospitals radiology department are not filled following Professor Dr. Nasir Raza Zaidi’s removal due to transfer to King Edward Medical University in 2011.

It is the same at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s radiology department, according to sources. The post of radiologist is vacant following Professor Safdar Malik was transferred to Services Hospital last year.

Safdar left after protests were launched against him from the department and students were levied, based on discrimination allegation.

Professor Mahfoozur Rehman’s resignation over a year ago has left the Children’s Hospital without a functioning head of its radiology department. The departments have been relying on associate professors in the absence of these senior doctors.

The hospitals are unable to manage radiological services due to administrative matters and burden of overall work. Simply put, there are not enough people capable and willing to handle the department.

Delays are becoming routine for CT Scan and MRI tests at the hospitals like Jinnah, where the department had a patient turnout of 400 individuals daily.

Dr. Amir Nadeem stated that he was unable to manage the situation effectively, as he reported over 40 MRI and CT Scan tests were not done for two weeks.

Situations continue to worsen as administration abolished two posts of the department, rather than filling them.

Health Secretary Arif Nadeem did not return calls regarding the issue. Special Assistant to Chief Minister of Health Khawaja Salman Rafique state he would speak with health authorities regarding the issues at hand.
