Common Spice Turmeric showing possible ways to Prevent Alzheimers after Tests Reports T33

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 13, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A compound found in a very common spice now shows signs of being a key aid in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

Every day, over 250 Australians are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. By the year 2050, more than a million will be suffering from the disease. A number that should raise an eyebrow of anyone.

But a 12-month clinical trial by the ECU and McCuster Alzheimer’s Research Foundation and Anglican Retirement Villages is investigating whether curcumin can prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Curcumin is found in turmeric, which is common household spice used for food preparation.

The ECU Foundation Char Ageing and Alzheimer’s Disease Professor Ralph Martins and ARV Dementia Research Consultant Kathryn Goozee led the clinical trial that saw 100 residents within ARV utilize curcumin supplements or placebo. The researchers would review results from amyloid brain scans, memory tests, as well as blood biomarker results.

The researchers will also use retinal scans, a recent technological advancement that allows for non-invasive and lowered cost, alternative to brain scanning.

Curcumin is known for being a top-notch antioxidant. It also has been widely touted as an anti-inflammatory, and is hypothesized to combat beta amyloid, a protein noted as being a cause of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

When beta amyloid is present, it often precedes the Alzheimer’s symptoms by up to 20 years. If curcumin is capable of preventing or staying the effects of the protein, much could be learned about the overall ability to deal with Alzheimer’s disease.

Ms. Goozee stated that it was critical a solution or solution-possibilities are found in order to offset the growing concern over an ever-growing disease.

There is so much that can be achieved in prevention with simple lifestyle modifications, and this type of study will provide some of those answers,” Ms. Goozee said.

“If we can demonstrate that a safe, inexpensive nutraceutical, like curcumin, optimizes health and preserves a cognitive function, it would be a significant advance in keeping Alzheimer’s at bay.”
