Experts term Starting with Eye Care at Birth Best Way to Ensure Great Eye Health reports LocalEyeExam

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 15, 2012 ) Spring, TX - Ophthalmologist Charlotte Akor believes the first eye exam in your life should take place at birth and that your pediatrician is most responsible for checking a child's eyes.

Most adults have good vision until the age of about age 40. After 40, a person may get presbyopia. Presbyopia is a vision condition in which the crystalline lens of the eye loses flexibility. The loss of flexibility takes place over a number of years and may not be noticeable until a person’s early- to mid-40s. This makes it difficult to focus on close objects, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA).

Presbyopia is a natural part of the eye’s aging process, not a disease, and it cannot be prevented. This is part of the reason you see people in drugstores purchasing ‘cheaters’ eyewear. At that point, it is a good idea to get an eye exam.

Young adults between 20-to-30 years old usually see an eye doctor because of blurred vision, whether it is from being nearsighted or farsighted. This is the most common cause of vision difficulties for young adults.

The appropriate time to begin getting screened for glaucoma is around age 40. Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders leading to progressive optic nerve damage. It is a loss of nerve tissue resulting in loss of vision, according to the AOA.

Akor notes that the illness affects not what you see, but how much you see and sometimes it is associated with high eye pressure, sometimes not. It is a “silent disease”, which makes it unnoticeable. So that is why 40 is a good time to have that first complete eye exam. The procedure includes having your pupils dilated and your optic nerve and retina checked closely.

If your routine eye exams are normal, you should schedule one every 4 years or so, up to age 65. After that, every 1 to 2 years is enough.

Eye conditions that go untreated can cause blindness. For example, a retinal detachment is a condition in which a curtain or shade appears to come over the vision. Those with this condition may experience flashing lights like tiny fireworks going off in the eye because part of the retina seems to be floating in the eye. This is a problem that needs to be treated immediately in order to correct a person’s vision.
