(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 27, 2012 ) Grand Rapids, MI -- Beauty has always been an engaging issue for women since time immemorial. Today however, this topic has gained popularity in men’s circle as well. The increasing number of metrosexuals has boosted even more the market for beauty products to this niche. A metrosexual is defined by Merriam Webster as “a usually urban heterosexual male given to enhancing his personal appearance by fastidious grooming, beauty treatments, and fashionable clothes”. Indeed, a beauty product are no longer an exclusively girl thing… it has now become a genderless item.
ABC news reports that the average woman applies 12 beauty products to her body daily while for men, its six daily. However, some concerned groups have raised the issue of cosmetic safety. Janet Nudelman, spokeswoman for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, advocates for safer cosmetics and hygiene products said, “The headlines over the years have really told the story of the problem of unsafe cosmetics. The problem is that there is no one minding the store. There is no federal regulation or law that says companies have to make safe products.” To lend truth to this observation, a recent study conducted by the FDA found out that “400 lipsticks on the market tested positive for lead” as reported by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
Elsewhere, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) declared its support for the vulnerable against exploitation. According to Fazel Fatah, Baaps president, "Over the last decade we have worked to educate the public on the many aggressive marketing gimmicks that not only trivialize surgery but endanger the patient. We have warned against the unrealistic expectations set by reality 'makeover' shows and against crass competition prizes promising 'mummy makeovers' and body overhauls. In no other area of surgery would one encounter two-for-one offers. The pendulum has swung too far." They association further stated that “hundreds of thousands of non-surgical procedures are done, many by non-medical staff”.
The issue of cosmetics, its dangers and benefits should be a cause for concern for all of us, because even if we do not use them most probably our love ones do. We all say that beauty is skin deep and that the more important issue is our beauty inside. However, the commercial ads can easily draw us to try a product just because the model is popular.
