Study Says Colorectal Cancer May Have Link to Chronic Constipation reports H Miracle Reviews

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 28, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study claims that people who have chronic constipation are at a higher risk for developing colorectal cancer.

The study was presented at the American College of Gastroenterology's annual scientific meeting held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The results showed that both benign neoplasms and colorectal cancer are more common in patients with chronic constipation compared to those who have healthy bowel movements.

Benign neoplasms are abnormal growths or tumors made up of cells that divide and reproduce independently from the surrounding healthy tissue.

The study, which ran from January 1999 to September 2011, featured 28,854 patients who had constant constipation and 86,562 patients with normal bowel movements.

When too much water is absorbed by the colon, or if the colon's muscle contractions are slow, the stool moves through the colon too slowly, which results in hard, dry stool and leads to constipation.

According to the study, the risk of developing colorectal cancer in patients with constant constipation was 1.78 time higher than regular patients while the risk of developing benign neoplasms was 2.7 times higher.

Co-investigator Nicholas Talley, a researcher at the University of Newcastle, said in a statement, "In this study, patients with chronic constipation were found to be at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and benign neoplasms."

"Although chronic constipation is considered a relatively benign disease, practitioners should be aware of this potential association to monitor and treat accordingly," Talley said.

According to Talley, further research should be conducted to determine whether patients who have their constipation under control lower their risk of developing benign neoplasms or colorectal cancer.
