(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 29, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A Blue Cross Blue Shield prescription drug plan received a five-star rating from a federal agency. The rating makes it possible for individuals in the state who are eligible to receive Medicare to be able to enroll into the program throughout next year.
The program, known as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota's Medicare Rx, earned the rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which is a federal agency that administers health-related programs. Medicare drug plans around the country are rated from one to five stars, with five representing "excellent performance."
In order to receive a five-star rating, the insurance provider, according to the CMS star rating system, must provide outstanding performance in a number of areas, such as customer service, drug pricing, patient safety, and the size of their pharmacy network.
Providers who earn lower ratings are required to hold enrollment for Medicare-eligible individuals from October 15 through December 7 while those receiving the top rating can have open enrollment throughout the year.
According to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota's chief government officer, Patsy Riley, "The CMS Star Rating is a great tool for helping people with their Medicare plan selection. We are pleased that our prescription drug plan has achieved the top rating for three years in a row."
