(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 02, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- In a new book, a London-based dentist writes that daily use of dental floss has no effect on preventing tooth decay and advocates the use of multiple mouthwashes to slow down the wear and tear on your teeth. In order to prevent tooth decay and loss, Dr. Ellie Phillips, writes in her book, "Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye," that a regimen that includes a mouthwash with chlorine dioxide, followed by a regular mouthwash, then a fluoride-based mouthwash will have more beneficial effect on your teeth than flossing. Although no study currently exists that shows any benefit from using dental floss, many dentists claim that the reason for that is so many people do it correctly. Although highly recommended by dentists, estimates show that only 5% of patients regularly floss. Phillips says in her book that a chlorine dioxide-based mouthwash, such as Ultradex, is effective in washing away the bacteria that causes tooth decay. Following up with a regular mouthwash, such as Listerine, aids in the cleaning process, while a fluoride-based mouthwash can aid the body in fortifying and fixing damaged teeth. Phillips also recommends the use of sweeteners and gums that contain Xylitol, a sweetener that occurs naturally and has been shown in some studies to reduce tooth decay. Dentists argue proper use of dental floss is beneficial in the fight against tooth decay, as well as heart disease, since the same plaque that causes gum disease causes heart disease as well. According to dentists, by not flossing, the average human only reaches about 60% of their teeth's surface when following regular brushing techniques. All dentists, including Phillips, agree that avoiding sugary foods and brushing immediately after meals with a fluoride-based toothpaste are the keys to maintaining proper dental health. Xylitol, while shown beneficial in the fight against tooth decay, may lead to diarrhea and flatulence and is not recommended for young children or the elderly.
