After speaking with department chair of dental hygiene at Georgia Perimeter College, Cherie Rainwater, it is clear that the industry is growing as people begin to figure out what a career in dental hygiene truly means.
Rainwater calls dental hygiene one of the “most rewarding” jobs around and one that entails much more than just cleaning teeth. According to Rainwater, the real focus of a dental hygienist is oral care. That means not only cleaning teeth, but also checking for oral cancers and any other disease that could infiltrate a person’s mouth.
It is a fact that around 50% of people who get oral cancer only survive for five years, but if caught early, that number can be drastically changed, which is part of the job description for those studying dental hygiene. In a matter of fact, a dental hygienist can save lives.
As for the notion the dental hygiene is an “easy” career path, Rainwater shut that down pretty quickly and with force. According to the department chair, not only do you need great hand-eye coordination, but also superior knowledge in science and related fields in order to have the best experience and be fully prepared for the job.
Students normally take classes in anatomy, dental tissue, dental radiology, physiology, oral pathology, periodontology, and dental pharmacology, while at the same time learning techniques from instructors. Graduate students must then pass a seven-hour exam as well as a clinical patient exam in order to be fully certified. It is not an easy process and it takes discipline and skill like any other specialty.
For Rainwater, the best part about a career in dental hygiene is the people she has met. She says that working in an environment like a dentists office gives you a sense of family and trust, not to mention the fact that the average pay for a graduate working in an office is around $30 per hour; not too shabby.
