LATINO GROUPS SUPPORT PROPOSITIONS

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 02, 2008 ) Sacramento, CA - Several Latino groups have coalesced to support Propositions 94, 95, 96, and 97, which would increase the number of slot machines available at four large Indian gaming casinos in California. If approved, these Propositions would also require the Indian casinos to increase their share more than $9 billion with the State of California. California is currently facing a $14 billion deficit.

“We believe these Propositions are the right thing for us to support to help all the people of California,” says Joel Ayala, President and CEO for the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. “This will increase contributions to schools, fire departments, and education, all vital to our overall infrastructure.”

“These Propositions are necessary for many of our social programs to continue functioning,” added Phil Moralez, a business consultant. “California and all it’s residents will really gain from these propositions.”

In 2007, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed compacts with four southern California Indian gaming Tribes to increase the number of slot machines available in return for a commitment by each Tribe to increase their share with the State, and fellow Tribes. It is believed the total contribution to the State would be over $9 billion over the next several years. Indian gaming has become very popular in California and a key economic boost for Tribes seeking self-sufficiency.

Other Latino organizations supporting a Yes vote for Propositions 94, 95, 96, and 97 include the American G.I.Forum, the Mexican-American Political Association, and the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations. The California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce also join numerous Black and Asian organizations supporting a yes vote on the propositions. Governor Schwarzenegger and various republican and democratic groups also support the propositions.
