(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The La Roche-Posay annual awards for research recognized a wide range of skin-based research in North America, with the big prize being awarded to research conducted on skin
inflammation conditions.
The first prize was given to Dr. Anna De Benedetto, of the department of dermatology, at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who was given $10,000 for work done on the Role of Atopic Dermatitis Cytokines Milieu in Tight Junction Barrier Impairment.
“It is a great honor to receive this award. My research focuses on investigation the expression and function of skin tight junctions in atopic dermatitis in order to pave the way to better therapeutics aimed toward the repairing of the skin barrier,” stated Dr. De Benedetto.
“This is a new and exciting area of investigation in dermatology, with relevance to a number of
inflammatory skin conditions.”
Second prize at the awards went to Patricia Oyetakin-White, MD of Case Western Reserve university and Department of Dermatology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Third place was awarded to Boston University's Yoon-Soo Cindy Bae-Harboe, of the Department of Dermatology. Each was awarded $5,000 for their efforts.
Oyetakin-White was recognized for the work in the study of Effect of Ascorbic Acid on Melanin Synthesis in Human Keratinocytes and Melanocytes Exposed to Simulated Solar Radiation. Of her work, she stated: “This award will further my development as I transition from a research fellowship program to dermatology residency training.”
Bae-Harboe was recognized for work that looked into self-perceptions of skin cancer risk and photoaging after facial skin analysis. Bae-Harboe explained: “Using an appearance-based intervention approach, I aim to impact self-perceptions of photo-aging, which may be an indicator of skin cancer risk, to ultimately cultivate better sun protection habits.”
The awards were handed out to the respective researchers at the La Roche-Posay NorthAmerican Foundation Awards dinner amidst the 2013 American Academy of Dermatology,which was holding its 71st annual meeting in Miami.
