Study Finds Parents Unaware Dangers of Prescription Addiction in Teens

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- There seems to be a growing need for parents to discuss drug abuse that goes beyond the warnings of street drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and heroin. According to a new study, far too many teens are not being discouraged from drugs that can be found in their own home in the way of pain pills and muscle relaxers, even anti-anxiety medication.

According to the study done by Drugfree.org, teens who were asked if they had been talked to about prescription drug abuse, only 14% reported that they had in fact discussed the concept with their parents.

"For parents, it really comes down to not using the power they have because they don't think this is an immediate problem, meaning their own home, own neighborhood kind of thing," says Steve Pasierb, president of the partnership. "They believe that this is probably a safer way, not as bad as illegal street drugs."

In contrast, 82% of teens had been talked to about the risk of marijuana, which possess far less lasting health risks to the body in regards to both side effects and long-term effects.

Some parents did not see the risk of misusing drugs, according to the study, which is an even more troubling statistic.

One-in-six parents stated that they believe the misuse of prescription drugs was safer than street drugs, according to the survey. Another third of parents stated that attention deficit hyperactivity medications like Ritalin and Adderall improved a child's testing performance, even if the child had no history of ADHD. The numbers were showed a woeful misinformed tally across the board for parents.

Tracey and Jeff Gerl, parents of a son who has a drug abuse problem, the news the abuse and affliction of addiction existed was a pure shock. "We just didn't know," said Jeff. He and his wife had the "drugs are bad" talk with their son, Nick, and thought he got the message. They called the parents of friends when he said he was spending the night to make sure an adult would be home. They tried to get to know his friends. Despite their efforts, Nick started smoking pot at the age of 12.

Nick has since been sent to a program and is now attempting to turn his life around at 16 years of age. "My family life is a lot better. I'm realizing there are fun things in life that I can do sober,. I got a chance to get clean and I have my whole life ahead of me."
