(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- US researchers found that study participants who consumed yogurt at least twice a day fortified with probiotics showed they less anxiety and lower levels of activity in the brain associated with emotion and pain.
Scientists have long suggested that bacteria found in the gut send signals to the brain that can change over time depending on the person’s diet. Previous studies showed that probiotics positively affected the brains of rats, but until now, there were no studies done on the human brain and how it was affected by probiotics.
Researchers knew that the gut sends signals to the brain, which would explain why so many people have stress-related gastrointestinal problems, such as ulcers, constipation and stressinduced irritable bowel syndrome.
The participants were all within a healthy weight range and aged between 18 and 53, were split into three groups. The first group ate a yogurt with live bacterial cultures twice a day for a month, another group ate dairy product with no living bacteria, while the third group was given no dairy products at all. The group who hate the probiotic also reported that they felt healthier in addition to feeling less stressed.
