(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 17, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new long-term study, sleep apnea has been found to increase the risk of cardiac death. This supports what doctors have long thought.
The study, spearheaded by Dr. Apoor Gami, a cardiac electrophysiologist at the Midwest Heart Specialists-Advocate Medical Group out of Elmhurst, Illinois, explains that individuals incur a significantly increased risk of cardiac death with the presence of sleep apnea. Dr. Gami’s research was published online in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology on June 11.
Roughly 12 million adults are affected by sleep apnea, a condition in which an individual stops breathing frequently while sleeping, However, many remain undiagnosed. Persons with the condition must undergo a sleep test to determine whether or not they stop breathing for ten seconds or more a minimum of five times per hour while sleeping.
450,000 people die each year in the US from sudden cardiac death according to the study. This occurs because of problems with the heart’s electrical system that cause the heart to stop beating. For a person to survive, the condition must be addressed within minutes. Outside research suggests that the current obesity epidemic in the US is in part to blame for the rise in sleep apnea.
Researchers tracked over 10,000 women and men over a period of 15 years. Individuals were on average in their early 50s and had been referred to the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center to undergo sleep studies. It was discovered that 78 percent of those individuals had sleep apnea. In follow-up examinations, 142 individuals were found to have had sudden cardiac arrest, which were either fatal or the person was resuscitated.
There are three strong predictors of sudden cardiac death that came out of the study. Risk factors include being over the age of 60, having an average of 20 apnea episodes each hour or having low blood oxygen levels.
