(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 17, 2013 ) Jupiter, FL -- Beukas, 47, brought his mobile dental practice to elderly residents at nursing homes and assisted-living centers around the state of New Jersey. He also owned three stationary practices in Wyckoff and Colts Neck in Monmouth County. Last Wednesday, he was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was given a $50,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Renee Marie Bumb also imposed a $69,883 restitution fee for the bankruptcy creditors he scammed.
In June of 2012, Beukas pleaded guilty to one count each of tax evasion and bankruptcy fraud and faced 46 to 57 months in prison per sentence guidelines. The dentist admitted that he failed to disclose an income of $1.3 million in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition filed in 2008.
Wednesday, Beukas was charged with evading more than $800,000 in taxes from the period of 2005 to 2008.
Beukas’ defense attorney, Rocco C. Cipparone Jr., plea for leniency in the case, noting that Beukas had provided over 20 years of free dental services to thousands of patients, including the elderly. He was also able to show the Beukas offered over $117,000 in charitable acts in the past three years alone.
Unfortunately, Beukas, In February of this year, he was indicted by a state grand jury with four other dentists and two office managers on charges of defrauding the Medicaid program out of more than $5.5 million.
Beukas’ mobile practices catered to residents of nursing homes, assisted living centers, adult day-care facilities and private homes throughout the state allegedly over-billed the New Jersey state medicaid program and submitted claims for providing services to patience that he had not performed.
