(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 20, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- New guidelines were published this month for acne treatments. While 12 years old used to be considered young for acne treatment, children today are hitting puberty earlier, causing them to get acne, blackheads and whiteheads and other facial blemishes due to hormonal changes much younger.
Authors of the new guidelines say that the age of acne has been shifting, and Dr. Latanya T. Benjamin, a dermatologist in a children’s hospital concurs that she sees much younger kids for acne these days than she did a few years ago. She said it’s not uncommon to see children as young as seven come in with the first signs of acne on their face.
There are many scientists who debate the theory of early puberty. Instead, critics say that there is a higher intolerance for acne and parents will rush their children to a dermatologist that will prescribe powerful acne treatment to young children, and even though they are prescribed a lot, many of the medications are being used off-label and haven’t been tested on kids.
A 2011 dermatology study noted that the average age of children seeking acne treatment for the first time lowered from 15.8 in in 1979 to 15.0 in 2007, and the number of children between the ages of 6 and 8 seeking a dermatologist for acne treatments went up by 1.5 percent.
To make matters worse, sometimes parents are more aggressive on getting their child treatment than the child actually is. Dr. Benjamin says parents will come in to her office and ask for treatment for their child so they don’t get bullied or picked on. And sometimes, she says, they are just perfectionists.
