Study Says Six-Month Visit to Dentist May Not Be Necessary

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 20, 2013 ) Round Rock, TX -- For a handful of decades, it was standard practice for dentists to urge all adults to schedule preventative visitations to make sure teeth were clean and hygienic ritualism was being followed. However, a new study has found that an annual cleaning may be plenty adequate, rather than going every six months. The study has noted that it seems there is no heightened risk by heading to a professional once every 12 months.

Nearly a half of adults aged 30 or older has a form of chronic inflammation stemming from gum disease that can lead to the loss of teeth. The recent study was published by the Journal of Dental Research suggested that the frequency of dental visits need simply be better focused, rather than more frequent. It noted other preventative services ought be turned directly to assisting avoidance of the diseases that can cause gums to become compromised, ultimately leading to the loss of teeth.

"The findings suggest that for low-risk patients, a yearly prophylactic visit does prevent tooth loss over a protracted period of 16 years, and there's no significant difference in an added visit," said Dr. Robert Genco, a periodontist and SUNY distinguished professor of oral biology at the University at Buffalo, who was not involved in the study. "They found if you had more than one risk factor, that maybe two visits isn't optimal."

Simply put, preventative care reduces tooth loss. That said, there is little evidence to support the six-month norm being better than a visit once per year. Part of the reason being that the home hygienic products that can now be purchased assist individuals in avoiding common deterioration of teeth.

Experts stress that those who have a reason to be concerned, such as a preexisting condition that causes their gums/teeth to be compromised, should consult a professional about how often they may want to schedule visits. Those who intake high acidic foods, or drink multiple sodas or juices per day would also be wise to stick with a six-month regimen.

"If you are high risk, it is much more important for you to be seen frequently, but for the low-risk people it's not," said Dr. William Giannobile, the study's lead author and the chairman of the department of periodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. "The take-away is not that you don't need to see the dentist; it's that each patient needs to be treated in their own individual way."
