New Study Says Cheese May Prevent Dental Problems

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 23, 2013 ) Carmichael, CA -- Published in the medical journal General Dentistry, Dr Ravishankar Telgi from the Kothiwal Dental College and Research Center, and his team took 68 participants between the ages of 12 and 18 and studied their PH levels on their plaque and noted whether or not they consumed dairy products.

A PH level of 5.5 or lower is a high risk factor for tooth and enamel erosion. When tooth enamel is gone, it cannot be replaced and causes the tooth to decay and rot away, eventually leading to losing teeth or having to have teeth pulled.

The participant group that consumed milk and cheese and other sugar-free dairy products had a higher PH level on their teeth than the group of patients that did not consume dairy products. Cheese, however, showed to provide a rapid increase in PH levels for patients, indicating that, that food could help fight dental cavities and other problems that arise from tooth erosion.

The study authors note that cheese could positively affect PH and enamel by the increase in saliva it takes to chew the sticky substance. Saliva helps to naturally prevent against tooth erosion, which it why it’s important to keep a dry mouth moist.

Dr Seung-Hee Rhee, spokesperson of the Academy of General Dentistry, said that dairy is an overall healthy food product. Not only does it provide an alternative snack to sugary foods, but it also can be eaten to prevent dental caries.
