New Infographic Released on Hearing Loss

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 25, 2013 ) Grandville, MI -- A new infographic was recently launched on hearing loss. With important facts and statistics, this informative piece is vital for anyone that is suffering from this common ailment. According to the infographic, hearing loss is defined as being partially or completely unable to hear sound in one or both ears. According to the National Institutes of Health and National Council on Aging, 12% of Americans suffer from significant hearing loss. This is roughly 38 million people across the nation.

There are several possible causes of hearing loss as well. This includes infections, along with birth defects and the aging process. Head injuries, ear injuries, and reactions to drugs are also attributed to hear loss. A common factor in temporary or possible permanent hearing loss is excessive exposure to loud noise.

The infographic also highlights a number of facts related to temporary or permanent hearing loss. This includes the fact that approximately 2 million people are profoundly deaf. 30-40% of people over 65 also have some type of hearing loss. An additional 14% of people 45-64 have some type of hearing loss as well. Sadly, even children between the ages of 6-19 have measurable hearing loss in at least one year.

Based on the infographic, hearing loss occurs in 5 out of every 1,000 newborn babies. Over 90% of deaf children are also born to parents that can hear. According to the Center for Hearing and Communication, exposure to a noisy subway for just 15 minutes a day can cause permanent hearing damage over time.

Mild hearing loss can also cause students to miss as much as 50% of classroom discussions. While most people love music, excessive exposure to loud music can result in hearing damage. In fact, sitting in front of concert speakers at 120 DB can damage hearing in only 7 ½ minutes.

Listening to an MP3 player at high volumes may cause permanent hearing damage over time as well. In the U.S. alone, over 50 million people suffer from ‘tinnitus’ or ‘ringing in the ears.’ Sadly, 15 million people with hearing loss avoid seeking help each year. In fact, most people with hearing issues wait an average of 7 years before seeking medical help. Unless you go to a hearing specialist or doctor, only 16% of physicians screen their patients for hearing loss during visits. While there are many types of hearing ailments, the most common is sensorineural hearing loss. Sadly, this hearing problem is usually irreversible.
