Indoor Environmental Hazards Linked To Respiratory Illnesses

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 24, 2013 ) Durham, North Carolina -- There has been a lot of talk over the past few years about whether or not traditional candles are becoming a health risk.

Research has indicated certain types of scented candles produce smoke laced with almost as many toxins as cigarettes.

American researchers published a recent study, which found that toxins were released at dangerous levels from candles. These chemicals included carcinogens and chemicals known to cause asthma attacks, such as toluene and benzene.

However, it would be very difficult for you to know that this is the case given that there is no labeling requirement for candles.

And to complicate the matter, the problem also stems from the way that traditional candles are used. If a candle has a long wick it will produce smoke and emit soot into the environment. Traditionally, candles are not burned in places with open ventilation although this would make them safer; you wouldn't be able to smell the scent that you were aiming to enjoy. Rather they are burned in closed areas such as bathrooms, or during the evenings and cool winter months when doors and windows are typically closed.

The toxins cannot escape when you are burning the candle and are likely to linger in your home environment unless you thoroughly air out the space which is unlikely in cold winter months or at night. And frankly it remains to be seen, whether airing a room after burning a candle for hours and hours day after day would actually remove the culprits that might be harming you and your family's respiratory system.

Sadly this has brought us to a new era of indoor pollution. Now couple this with the off gassing of synthetic materials in carpeting and toxins in wall paints deemed safe for the home, adding traditional scented candles to the mix can create a scenario that is potent enough to raise the risk of respiratory ailments, eczema and skin complaints to name just a few.

Paraffin candles are frequently made from the lower quality paraffin wax which is a byproduct of the heavily chemical laden petroleum industry. These types of candles seem to carry the bulk of toxins.

In addition, in the US, lead based wicks are theoretically banned, but who is to say whether an imported candle sold in the US market is held to the same standard. Believe it or not, wicks have been a point of controversy for some time. There are 2 popular types of wicks that you need to be aware of; one with cores and ones without.

An all cotton organic wick without a core is ideal, however, as it is a soft material it is not the preferred choice of commercial candle makers because some will not stand rigid in the candle wax. It is likely to flop over and cause the candle to burn irregularly which can be quite hazardous. Or it may cause the candle to extinguish itself.

To avoid this problem candle wicks with cores have been developed. If a cheap synthetic material is used to lend support to the wick, the chemicals in that wick produce soot which is then added to the toxic emission cocktail already in the candle wax.

Most people are not aware of the dangers linked to paraffin based scented candles which have grown to be a very popular luxury item in the past few years. The good news is that you don't have to give up your scented candle past-time entirely, you just need to make smart informed choices when you make your candle purchases.

Soy wax candle are much safer as they burn longer and more cleanly than paraffin candles. Always make sure they are made with safe dyes and all cotton wicks. Insist on scents blended from real essential oils and not chemical scents.

Keep your wicks trimmed to lessen the potential of smoke. Seek out true quality candle makers. We love Naturally Me brand found on Amazon. com as they are American made, certified vegan, they use core-less environmentally tested wicks, natural soy wax and recyclable containers.
