Double-Blind Study Finds Four Essential Foods to Combat Prostate Cancer

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 26, 2013 ) Rome, Italy -- According to the latest research coming out of Britain, broccoli, turmeric, green tea, and pomegranate are the best defenses against prostate cancer. The finding is highly important to both the United States and the United Kingdom, as prostate cancer is the most common form among males in both nations.

Professor Robert Thomas and his team conducted a six-month study that involved 203 adult males, each with pre-existing prostate cancer. The men were split into two groups. The first was given the essence of pomegranate, turmeric, green tea, and broccoli, while the other was given a placebo.

The participants were given capsules to take each day, with either the target ingredients or a placebo. The researchers followed up on the groups after 6 months of use. Those with the essence had PSA levels that were 63% lower than those within the placebo group.

PSA, or prostate-specific antigen is a protein that is produced within the prostate by prostate cells. Blood is tested for PSA, which helps in the early detection of prostate cancer that is forming in an individual. Those with the cancer have higher and rising blood-PSA levels. The PSA blood test assists doctors in deciding whether more tests are necessary to determine if an individual as early stages of the cancer.

The specific study by Dr. Thomas was held in a double-blind. Either the doctors or the participants were aware which group was being given the placebos, and which were offered the essence holding broccoli, pomegranate, green tea, and turmeric.

Thomas said of the study's findings: "Our experience in offering high-quality clinical care, collaboration with cancer charities and world-class research with the University of Cambridge has resulted in findings which will have a worldwide impact. We hope this will help millions of men to help combat the onset of prostate cancer.”

Thomas continued by saying, “At the Primrose Unit in Bedford there is a long track record of designing and evaluating lifestyle strategies so this was a natural progression. Healthy eating and lifestyle is the main way of helping to combat the development of cancer but men can now also turn to a whole food supplement which has been shown to work."
