(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 26, 2013 ) Fort Lauderdale, FL -- Facial fractures are relatively common in children who play sports and can pose a serious injury in a wide range of sports. A new study, published after five years of research in the June issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, says.
Researchers analyzed over 165 children and adults who had sports-related fractions that went to emergency rooms from the years 2000 to 2005. During that time, 10.6 percent of fractures in children were sports-related. Nasal fractures, eye fractures, and skull fractures were the most common types of fractures seen. Nearly 80 percent of injured children were boys and over two-thirds of them were between the ages of 12 and 15 years old. Most of the cases happened because the child was hit by a ball.
Most of the injuries were not life threatening, many of them were very serious. Almost 50 percent of children were hospitalized, including 15 percent that was admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU).
Some of the injuries sustained required reconstructive and plastic surgery to fix noses, of children who were hit in the face by a baseball or softball. While cosmetic surgery is very uncommon in children, many need it to fix injuries sustained while playing sports.
By collecting data on children who receive facial fractures from sports and studying how they happen, sports medicine and equipment companies can come up with better ways to protect children from those injuries by developing pads and helmets to sustain injuries at a minimum.
