(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 26, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to new research coming out of Finland, Vitamin C may hold the key to opening up the airways of one's lungs. The vitamin, when used in supplement to exercise, has been shown to help increase cardio functions for some individuals.
Working out over an extended period causes shortness of breath for 10% of all people, and nearly 50% of competitive athletes, according to research published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. That said, by utilizing 500 to 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C slashes the overall symptoms of the affliction known as bronchoconstriction. The vitamin is 40% more effective than placebo, according to Dr. Harri Hemila.
The reason for vitamin C being effective against shortness of breath is still a bit of a question mark to scientists, according to Hemila. They do know that exercise helps the body release natural histamine that is able to assist in staying the tightening and contracting of muscle tissue. Research indicates C may simply limit tissue tightening response.
The positive of the finding is that Vitamin C is both safe and effective. Dr. Hemila emphasized that it is not meant to replace inhalers for those who need them. But taking 1,000 mg of C a couple hours before workouts can increase one's ability to breathe more efficiently.
The USDA recommends 90 mg of vitamin C daily, but over 2,000 can be taken without concern for side effect The possible side effects of over-usage of vitamin C include diarrhea and nausea, according to Manuel Villacorta, M.S., R.D. “The vitamin’s water soluble, so your body flushes out whatever you don’t need,” he explains. Not a fan of supplements? Foods like oranges, bell peppers, and organic tomatoes are loaded with C, too.
