(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 26, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Daily Mail, a UK-based newspaper, has recently come out with an impotence calculator to judge a man’s risk of becoming impotent. Researchers have long understood the effects of smoking, high blood pressure and age on erectile dysfunction, but this new calculator integrates other factors, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Roughly half of British men between the ages of 40 and 70 are believed to suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) at some point. Furthermore, it is increasingly common for younger men to suffer from ED - 8% in their 20s and 11% in their 30s. However, for younger men, the cause is often psychological with stress or anxiety as the main factors.
Designed by DrEd.com, the calculator helps men understand their personal risk factors associated with ED.
Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, will lose the exclusive right to produce the drug this week. Since 1999 it has been manufacturing the drug exclusively. Many believe the price of the drug could fall by 90%. Over 20 other manufacturers are interested in producing a generic version of the drug and have applied for a license to do so.
While there are many causes of ED, lifestyle tends to be the most important factor in older men. Some of these risk factors are high cholesterol, being overweight, high blood pressure, smoking, drinking alcohol, lack of exercise and diabetes. An unhealthy lifestyle contributes to a narrowing of the blood vessels in the penis, which reduces circulation and inhibits the penis from filling with blood.
In the UK last year, 2.3 million men were prescribed the drug, which cost the NHS over 40 million pounds. However, recent cuts at the NHS have made the drug more difficult to come by, and it is now only available to those suffering from prostate cancer, multiple sclerosis and diabetes.
