Steroid Injections May Pose Fracture Risk

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 01, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study suggests that older adults who receive steroid injections in their lower back for spine and leg pain may have an increased risk of suffering a spinal fracture. However, it isn’t completely clear that the steroids are the main cause of spinal fractures.

The study, which was published in this month’s edition of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery suggests that older patients with lower bone density should consider all risks and benefits and be extremely cautious when choosing steroid injections for pain relief.

Steroid injections involves infusing anti-inflammatory steroid drugs into one of the regions of the spine that is causing back pain, such as the lumbar, thoracic or sacrum. Reasons for pain include degenerative disc disease, herniated disc or spinal stenosis, which is a condition common in older in adults where the spaces of the spinal column narrow.

However, spinal injections can cause bone density loss over time, and giving the treatment to older adults and those with osteoporosis and other bone density diseases are at heightened risk for spinal fractures. The new research goes a step further to show instances where steroid injections increased the fracture risk for older patients.

Dr. Shlomo Mandel, the head researcher in the study said that he wasn’t implying people shouldn’t get the injections, but he wanted to raise awareness that there are fracture risks for repeated spinal injections.

The spinal injections themselves do not cause the fractures, the anti-inflammatory drug, often an NSAID pain reliever works on the body and may quicken bone density loss.
