(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 05, 2013 ) Alberta, Canada -- When it comes to encouraging a bright smile, saying cheese is not just a catchphrase photographers use any more. A clinical study result, recently published in the journal “General Dentistry,” concluded that eating cheese might help prevent tooth decay.
The authors of the published study tested a sample group consisting of sixty-eight children ranging from twelve to fifteen years of age. The group of children were split up into three subgroups. One group was given cheddar cheese to eat. Another group was given milk to drink. The third group ate sugar-free yogurt. After the children finished their treats, the researchers tested the pH levels inside their mouths.
The results of the tests were then tallied. No pH change had occurred in the mouths of the children who drank the milk. The children who ate yogurt, likewise, had pH levels that remained constant before and after the snack. However, the children who enjoyed their snack of cheddar cheese showed rapid pH level increases.
It was determined by the researchers that eating cheese causes pH levels to increase more than drinking milk or eating sugar-free yogurt. The lower the pH levels, the greater the risk of tooth erosion. The high pH levels helps fight tooth decay. Therefore, eating cheese is good for overall dental health.
The researchers concluded that eating cheese was better for tooth decay-free teeth than eating sugar-free yogurt or drinking milk. It may be that eating cheese causes more saliva to form in the mouth, raising the pH level, which helps fight tooth decay. The compounds in cheese may also protect teeth from acid by adhering to tooth enamel.
