(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 14, 2013 ) Titusville, FL -- A new study is about to begin, which will explore the best way to treat dental decay.
Led by researchers at various universities, the FICTION study will include over 1,400 children from around the UK. The universities of Dundee, Leeds and Newcastle will spearhead the project, with help from colleagues from the Universities of Cardiff, Glasgow, Queen Mary, Sheffield and London.
Over fifty dental practices around the UK have signed up for the study and are now looking for children to partake in the research. The goal of the study is to definitively determine the best manner for treating dental decay.
More than 40 percent of children in the UK show signs of decay before the age of five, despite the fact that tooth decay is one of the most common preventable ailments. Tooth extraction is the most common treatment, as having the tooth filled occurs in only 12 percent of cases.
The study will test three methods of treating tooth decay: healthy eating, varnish, and preventative treatments, including fluoride and sealants. Two other methods will also be tested - biological treatment combined with preventative approaches and traditional filling methods.
The research will also explore how children (between the ages of 3 and 7) feel about each treatment.
Professor Gail Douglas at the University of Leeds said that she is enthusiastic about decisively establishing which method of managing decay leads to the best outcomes for children.
