Green Alternatives to Skin Cancer

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 14, 2013 ) Fort Lauderdale, FL -- Green Leafy Vegetables

Researchers at Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Queensland, Australia discovered that eating leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, plays a significant role in reducing skin cancer risk. The study involved one thousand people from Sunshine Coast, Queensland. It has been conducted over the past eleven years and is led by Dr. Jolieke van der Pols.

Subjects that consumed at least three servings per week of green vegetables reduced their risk of skin cancer by fifty-five percent, the researchers discovered. The carotenoids, folic acid, lutein, zeaxanthin, as well as Vitamins A and C found in the vegetables are believed to work together to fight cancer.

Green Tea

A study at the University of Minnesota Hormel Institute involved an extraction derived from green tea. The solution the scientists produced contained chemicals known as polyphenols. The solution was clinically tested on live mice, which were then exposed to UV light.

A protein named JNK-2 is postulated to be directly related to the development of skin cancer. The application of the polyphenols was found to block JNK-2 and thus reduce the formation of skin tumors. The study is now trying to develop ways to use the green tea derivative topically.

Aspirin

Although aspirin is white, some doctors give some women the green light to take it daily for the prevention of melanoma. New information published in the American Cancer Society's medical journal, Cancer, links a decreased risk for melanoma to taking aspirin daily.

The research was conducted on nearly sixty thousand white women between fifty and seventynine years of age. The study took place over a twelve-year period in which some of the women took eighty-one milligrams of aspirin daily. The results showed that the women who took the aspirin had a twenty-one percent lower risk of developing melanoma than those who did not.

It is too soon to recommend that all women take aspirin daily. However, in cases in which a woman has a family history of melanoma, some doctors feel the benefits far outweigh the risks.
