Fewer, Larger Meals May Help you Lose Weight

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 24, 2013 ) Henderson, NV -- Eating many small meals throughout the day has been championed as a way to keep your metabolism up and stave off hunger to help lose weight. However, a new study might change your strategy.

Instead of six small meals throughout the day, what could lead to more weight loss is two large meals early and skipping dinner. This new research was presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions conference last week in Chicago.

Dr. Hana Kahleova, the lead study author, explained that both human and experimental studies support the positive impact of intermittent fasting.

The research was conducted in the Czech Republic in which 54 patients with Type 2 diabetes were monitored for 24 weeks. The participants were randomly split into two groups and followed a diet that reduced their caloric intake by 500 calories per day. The diet was composed of less than 30% fat, 20-25% protein and 50-55% carbohydrates.

One group ate three main meals and had snacks in between each meal. The other group ate two large meals - one between 6 and 10 a.m. and another between noon and 4pm After twelve weeks, the groups switched diet plans.

Researchers found that both groups lost weight, and the group that ate only two large meals lost more during its 12-week session. Eating fewer, larger meals also decreased fasting blood sugar levels, which indicates that the body’s insulin production had become more efficient.

The study also found that the frequency and timing of the groups’ meals did not appear to have an effect on the glucose metabolic clearance rate or the function of beta cells that produce insulin.

While it may not be sustainable to skip dinner every day, there are a few tricks that can help you maintain your weight. The first is to make the last meal of the day a light one that is low in calories. Another tip is to take a 15-minute walk after dinner, which has been shown to help lower your risk for diabetes.
