Bing Cherries Helps Lower Inflammatory Diseases, Study Suggests

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to James Michael, vice president of marketing for Northwest Cherry Growers & Washington State Fruit Commission, cherries are just an all around head-to-toe anti-inflammatory agent.

Darshan Kelly, a USDA research chemist and adjunct professor at the University of California, who spearheaded the study, believes that other sweet cherries besides Bings could also have the same effect. Similar effects have been reported with tart cherries.

People have believed for generations that cherries positively affect inflammatory diseases such as gout or arthritis, Michael said, but this study helps give those beliefs some backbone. Patrick Sullivan, a cherry farmer and a Washington State Fruit Commission board member, is happy to hear there is finally enough research to show there is health benefits of eating eating sweet cherries.

The study, paid for by Northwest Cherry Growers, analyzed samples from a 2006 study, were 18 healthy adults age 45 California-grown Bing cherries each day for 28 days. The study found that Bing cherry consumption helped decrease the level of some inflammatory markers and increased the level of anti-inflammatory markers in the blood of the adults in the study.

Cherries from last year’s harvest were made into a powder for a future health studies, so research can be done outside of the 10-week period where cherries can be harvested.
