Some users see them as a way to add variety to other workouts and to target specific muscle groups. Others say they like to work on flexibility with exercise bands, and use them for rehab of injuries and muscle strains. Macoun sees a more practical reason for their popularity: "They're pretty economical. A lot of people feel that a gym or health club membership is a luxury they can't afford right now. There are a great many exercises possible using just the resistance in these simple bands, and after all you can take them anywhere."
With record heat in some parts of the country, many people may not even want to think about exercise at the moment. On the other hand, some resistance band fans claim they use them while lying on the floor watching TV in the cool comfort of their living room----what one perhaps slightly cynical commentator refers to as "kinetic sloth".
