(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 23, 2013 ) Whitestown, IN -- The Internet has been abuzz with reporting on a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) which alleges omega 3 fish oil could increase the chances of contracting prostate cancer by some 71%. Others sy 43% which, in itself, raises suspicion.
Although this has been frontline news in the supplement industry for a few weeks, experts (medical and other) have now started sticking out their necks in defense of Omega 3 fish oil and condemning this study.
WND reports that Michael Savage, Radio talk-show host who has a Ph.D. himself, slammed the study on his show.
Anthony Victor D'Amico, M.D., an expert on prostate cancer, was interviewed by Savage and had this to say "........really cannot make the conclusion that it's trying to, because these types of studies are not cause and effect; that is, if you take the fish oil you're going to get an aggressive or some kind of prostate cancer."
Pharmacy News reports on their website "Dr Wendy Morrow, CHC executive director, said the study was not specifically designed to look at the exact relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and prostate cancer."
FIS South Africa reports on their website "If omega-3 itself caused prostate cancer, the disease would be running rampant in countries like Japan, where the population consumes the greatest amount of fish and fish oil supplements in the world".
On their website they also claim that Japanese men have the lowest rates of prostate cancer.
A Southern Cross University professor, Professor Stephen Myers said the study showed no link between an increase in prostate cancer and the amount of omega-3 fatty acids consumed and the results were not strong.
"Given the fact that for cardiovascular reasons and arthritis reasons we are recommending people increase their fish intake and start taking fish oil supplements, prostate cancer should be significantly on the rise and it's not".
The benefits of Omega 3 fish oils and fatty acids seems to be standing the test of time and many years of innumerable medical and scientific studies back that up.
