Omega 3 Fish Oil May Heal Bed Sores

Tess McKay of Ballena Nelle nutraceuticals explains why omega 3 fish oil has so many health benefits

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 23, 2013 ) Nevada, Las Vegas -- Bed sores – also known as pressure sores, decubitus ulcers or pressure ulcers – are injuries that are common to patients who are confined to a bed or wheelchair. The sores develop from extended pressure on the skin.

Professor Pierre Singer and doctoral candidate Miriam Theilla conducted a three-week study of 40 critically ill patients. Half of the patients were given eight grams of fish oil daily.

The patients who received fish oil had less pain and discomfort from bed sores than the control group. The group that received fish oil also had less body inflammation and more efficient immune systems compared to the control group.

The Israeli researchers were inspired by a previous study that suggested fish oil could raise oxygen levels in body tissues, since bed sores are partially caused by lack of oxygen.

Fish Oil contains omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are essential to the function of every cell in the human body. The human body doesn't produce essential fatty acids, so they must be ingested.

Western diets are generally high in omega-6 and low in omega-3 essential fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA), which are found in ocean algae and oily cold water fish.

"A daily supplement is a convenient way to achieve all the health benefits of an adequate omega-3 level," said Tess Mckay, a customer service representative for Ballena Nelle.

In addition to bed sores, the benefits of fish oils for treating a variety of other ailments, such as depression and asthma, are currently being researched. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that omega-3 fish oils may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Ballena Nelle uses sardines and anchovies from the southern Pacific, because they have the highest concentration of DHA and EPA and the lowest exposure to contaminants. "These two species are the cleanest and highest quality source of raw fish oil in the world," said Mckay.

The fish oil is then purified and independently tested in Norway to make sure the product does not contain mercury, PCBs or dioxins. The product is then shipped to the United States where it is manufactured into soft gel tablets.

Ballena Nelle Pharmaceutical Grade Omega-3 Fish Oil contains 55% EPA and DHA per capsule. Other fish oil supplements often contain less than 20% EPA and DHA and are composed mostly of fillers.
