Ms. Martin will be shaving her head on September 15, 2013 in an effort to get more awareness for childhood cancer. The St. Baldrick's society began in 1999 when two colleagues decided to shave their head and donate the money raised to children with cancer. Fourteen years later the foundation is still holding events where people shave their heads and raise money for the cause.
Ms. Martin is actively involved in bringing awareness to childhood cancer and is spreading the word about the lack of funding for this cause. The St. Baldrick's Foundation website, explains that there is currently a funding gap for childhood cancer research since government funding is more heavily provided for researching cures for adult cancer which has a higher incidence. The goal of St. Baldrick's Foundation is to raise money for childhood cancer research by spending as little money as possible.
In order for this foundation to be successful, they rely on volunteers to raise money by shave their heads. "Melissa is an inspiration to her community and to those affected by childhood cancer. I think it is really brave what she is doing and I hope she is successful at bringing awareness to this cause," says Kristen Heaton, founder of Crave Naturals.
Ms. Martin is still accepting donations for the fundraiser. Individuals wishing to donate to the cause can do so online where the donator will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
