Is Hot Tea Healthier Than Cold Tea?

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 24, 2013 ) Tokyo, Japan -- It has no doubt gotten easier to prepare a cup of tea. In addition to more products on the market, more studies and opinions regarding the effects of tea on human health have appeared. Since people worldwide drink only water in larger proportions, the debate as to the healthiest way to consume tea is an important one.

A study in the European Journal of Nutrition conducted in 2013 followed thousands of adult tea drinkers. When looking at the number of people who lost weight and consumed hot tea, it found those who regularly drank it this way saw the most benefit. Body mass index was also compared; both men and women saw an improvement. In this category, iced tea drinkers actually showed an increase in waist circumference.

Other things noted were the better glucose control in women who drank hot tea. This was not seen in men in the study. There were also differences in healthy, or HDL, cholesterol levels. Male drinkers were found to have higher HDL levels and lower triglycerides, compared to people who didn't drink tea at all. No benefit in this area was seen for women, but HDL levels and triglycerides decreased in women who drank more iced tea.

Additionally, proteins associated with inflammation and cardiovascular problems were measured. Women and men who drank hot tea had lower levels; iced tea did not have an impact. Experts have suggested various reasons for the differences. One reason for the benefits is that hot tea has more antioxidants. It also has less sugar, compared to iced tea.

Experts also suggest that iced tea often includes other ingredients, such as sugar and flavorings which can replace the amount of actual tea consumed. While tea overall has health benefits, the study showed that hot tea was the beverage of choice for people looking to optimize their health by consuming it.

As more Americans turn to drinking tea, sales of loose leaf tea and the tools for making and enjoying it have also increased. Making a glass of hot tea is easy with the Coolahoo Premium Tea Infuser which debuted on Amazon in July. The product is simple to use, as its shape and handle works with all sorts of cups, mugs, and pots. Its stainless steel mesh is also easy to clean, and as more water can come in contact with the tea leaves, it allows for more flavor and nutrients to get through.
