(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 17, 2013 ) Dothan, AL -- Babies Can’t Wait (BCW) is a Georgia early intervention program offered statewide that assists children up to three years old who have disabilities access services to enhance their development. The program is operated under the federally mandated Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. However, instead of waiting for children to attend school before disabilities are recognized, BCW works with pediatricians and healthcare providers to identify potential problems in infancy so assistance can be provided immediately. Developmental delays may be physical, cognitive, communication, social/emotional or adaptive. Children may be a part of the program if they have been diagnosed with a current or future potential developmental delay.
BCW helps children and their families by providing developmental evaluation, determining the child’s eligibility in the program at no cost to the parents, then developing a personalized plan of action and assisting the parents in connecting with community resources. As the child nears 3 years old, BCW will also assist the family in transitioning to other helpful resources such as Head Start. Services through the BCW program may include vision services, assistive technology devices, nutrition services, audiology, physical therapy, family training and counseling, psychological services, occupational therapy, speech therapy and special instruction.
To access the Babies Can’t Wait program, parents may call from anywhere in Georgia 800-229-2038 to be connected with the closest office to them. There are 19 offices spread throughout the state for the convenience of families. Additional phone numbers for specific areas of the state are:

Dekalb County board of Health 404-508-7981
Cobb & Douglas Counties 770-514-2759
Clayton County 678-610-7341.
Anyone who notes a potential deficit in an infant or toddler can refer the child to Babies Can’t Wait by calling one of the numbers above. There are no financial requirements for help, however some services will be billed to insurance or will be charged on a sliding scale based on the family’s income. Other services may be free.
The most formative years of a child’s life are the first three. A child who has or is at risk for developmental delays should enroll in the program before these years pass and the delays become more pronounced or cause additional problems later in life.
