(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 08, 2013 ) OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. – A new report on prescription drug abuse was released on Monday by nonprofit organization Trust for America’s Health.
The report indicated that Oklahoma has the fifth highest prescription drug overdose death rate throughout the entire country. However, the stat is doing more than others to fight the extreme amount of prescription drug abuse taking place.
The Trust for America’s Health report demonstrates Oklahoma had a prescription drug overdose death rate of 19.4 per 100,000 individuals between 1999 and 2010.
An executive director of Trust for America’s Health said “Prescription drugs can be a miracle for many, but misuse can have dire consequences. The rapid rise of abuse requires nothing short of a full-scale response - Starting with prevention and education all the way through to expanding and modernizing treatment”.
The top five states in this report for drug overdose death rate include:
1. West Virginia (28.9)
2. New Mexico (23.8)
3. Kentucky (23.6)
4. Nevada (20.7)
5. Oklahoma (19.4)
The report also states that prescription drug abuse has become an increased public health concern as the number of drug overdoses have drastically increased over the previous 15 years.
Oklahoma reportedly received eight out of ten possible indications that strategies to curve prescription drug abuse have been affective.
