"Turmeric comes from the Curcuma longa plant which is a part of the ginger family of herbs. The root and rhizome stem of the Curcuma Longa plant is crushed up and ground into a powder called Turmeric. Turmeric has long been used in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine for 1000's of years especially for treating inflammation.
The key compound found in turmeric is called curcuminoids and the 3 most common curcuminoids are curcumin, demethoxyl-curcumin, and bisdemethoxyl-curcumin. The most studied curcuminoid is "curcumin" which makes up about 2-5% of turmeric. "
Many of the medical studies have identified Curcumin as the key beneficial compound in Turmeric for medical applications. The issue though is that you would have to consume a large amount of Turmeric extract in order to get a large enough dose of Curcumin because Turmeric contains less than 5% curcumin on average.
Modern labs can extract the curcumin from Turmeric to create a concentrated Curcumin extract. The common standard for curcumin extract is 95% curcuminoids because there is little benefit in removing that extra 5% as purification from 95% to 100% curcumin does not increase bioavailability of curcumin.
There are a significant number of studies that have been done on Tumeric and Curcumin and with it being a natural health product, market demand is expected to grow in coming years as more consumers learn about the many health benefits.
