Alternative Lung Disease Therapy Provides Feasible Alternative to Lung Transplants

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 24, 2013 ) Miami, FL -- Pulmonary regenerative medicine is the latest alternative medical technology that is used for the repair and restoration of damaged or diseased lung tissue that is often caused by chronic lung disease. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is currently the third leading cause of death in the United States of America and quickly rising as the fourth leading cause of death around the world. Currently there are various invasive and suppressive medical treatments for for COPD sufferers but the rapidly progressive nature of the lung disease typically leads to a sever reduction in the quality of life.

Lung transplants are typically the most common treatment method but can be extremely risky, especially for older patients. Once the option for a lung transplant is exhausted, most COPD sufferers are told by pulmonary doctors that their treatment paths are limited. .

Below is an excerpt from the National Institutes of Health (NIH),that outlines current life expectancy of an individual after having lung transplant surgery.

“In recent years, short-term survival after lung transplant has improved. Recent data on single-lung transplants show that:

•     About 78 percent of patients survive the first year

•     About 63 percent of patients survive 3 years

•     About 52 percent of patients survive 5 years

As most can see, the average number of years that are added to a person’s life after lung transplant surgery ranges from about 4.7 years to 6.5 years depending on the severity of the disease and the type of surgery that is performed. This invasive procedure can improve the quality of life for a patient if successful but there are inherent risks of severe complications associated with organ transplants including but not limited to :rejection of the new tissue or lung(s), infections and in some cases there are increased chances of acquiring kidney issues, osteoporosis or into developing diabetes. Interestingly enough, the Survival rates for most double-lung transplants are actually slightly better than single lung transplants. Our Recent data has shown that the average survival for single-lung transplants is about 4.8 years. The average survival for double-lung transplants is about 6.8 years post surgery.

Lung Transplant for Lung Disease vs Stem Cell Therapy

Regenerative therapies in Thailand have clearly emerged as a viable alternative and pre-emptive solution to the invasive option of lung transplant surgery. The Stem Cell Regeneration Center of Thailand specializes in Hematopoietic stem cell therapy using autologous and allogeneic derived stem cells. These adult stem cells or somatic cells have the ability to begin the self-renewal process by rapidly replicating into alveoli lung cells and tissue that had been damaged by the underlying lung disease.

The COPD and Lung Disease protocol in Thailand requires 10-21 nights in Bangkok. The treatment itself is considered minimally invasive and performed in multiple stages as an outpatient procedure.

As the leaders in lung treatment, Lung Institute’s physicians have harnessed this advancement in modern medicine to bring patients suffering with conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary fibrosis an innovative treatment choice that betters their quality of life and helps them to breathe easier. Many of these terminal patients have been told by their doctors that lung transplantation is their only option and that is simply not the case. Thanks to compassionate care initiative in Thailand many patients are turning to advanced regenerative medical treatments such as pulmonary stem cell therapy in Bangkok to enhance their lung function and regenerate healthy lung tissue with fresh lung cells.

How do stem cells restore damaged lung tissue?

Lung Institute utilizes autologous stem cells, meaning those derived from the patient’s own blood or fat tissue, for treatment. These somatic, or adult, stem cells have the unique ability to self-renew and replicate, and are capable of forming any type of tissue found in the human body, including lung tissue.

Stem cell therapies are not appropriate for everyone and in some cases cannot replace the need for a single or double lung transplant. Stem cell therapy can in most cases however slow down the rapid progression of lung disease, and help prolong the need for lung transplant surgery.

A recent Cell Regeneration Center of Thailand patient, Cyril Levine, was diagnosed and treated for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Treatment Using Stem Cells at the center in Bangkok a little over 4 months ago. Cy is now recovering steadily and is able to perform most of his everyday functions without feeling out of breath. To learn more about how Cyril's life has improved with stem cell therapy for IPF watch his this video testimonial here.
