Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is the most commonly diagnosed motor neuron disease, affecting more than 30,000 people in the United States and more than 300,000 people worldwide. ALS is characterized by the rapid degeneration of nerves in the limbs and vital organs following diagnosis, resulting in atrophy, spasms, muscle weakness, difficulty speaking, breathing and swallowing, and eventually death.
Although ALS is a terminal illness with no known cure, hope remains for those who suffer from the disease, as various treatments have been developed that may significantly slow or even halt the progression of the disease, allowing patients to continue to live meaningful lives.
