(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 07, 2014 ) Glasgow, UK -- Virgin coconut oil shows promise as a treatment for sufferers of a common form of acne, according to a research. Acne Vulgaris is an inflammatory form of acne that is usually treated with antibiotics; it can be distressing and a hard to treat form of acne for some people.
Studies have been conducted to determine whether lauric acid, which is found in virgin coconut oil, could prove to be an effective, natural treatment for this skin condition. The trial conducted was carried out by a team of researchers and appeared in the J. Invest Dermatol journal.
The researchers set out to find whether lauric acid could act as an effective antibiotic and kill off the bacteria Propionibacterium acne's, which is known to contribute to the follicular inflammation that can cause this form of acne.
The study examined the antimicrobial properties of lauric acid when compared to common acne treatments such as benzyl peroxide.
It was shown that when lauric acid was used it had a stronger effect than benzoyl peroxide preparations. It was demonstrated that P.acne's was more sensitive to the lauric acid and that lauric acid did not cause toxicity to the epidermis.
During the research it was demonstrated that lauric acid was effective when given as an intradermal injection and when used as an epicutaneous application. It was also found that lauric acid was effective at decreasing the number of the P.acne's bacteria helping to relieve swelling and inflammation.
In conclusion, the researchers say that this study could eventually lead to new, effective treatments for this type of acne. It is hoped that lauric acid could be used to treat and manage this from of acne, and it could even replace the antibiotic treatments that are usually utilised.
