(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 07, 2014 ) Glasgow, UK -- Virgin coconut oil is purported to have many health benefits, One of the major benefits of organic coconut oil is its perceived anti-inflammatory effects; a study has confirmed that coconut oil can indeed help to reduce inflammation and pain.
The study, which was published in the Philippine Journal of Internal Medicine, was conducted with two aims in mind: to determine the anti-inflammatory effects of organic virgin coconut oil and to see how the anti-inflammatory effects of virgin coconut oil compared with medications such as aspirin and mefenamic acid.
Researchers used rats and mice to conduct the research; they were divided into separate treatment groups with some rodents being given mefenamic acid and some being fed 5ml or 10ml per kg of organic virgin coconut oil; the randomized group were given aspirin, distilled water of virgin coconut oil.
The rats and mice were injected with either carrageenan or albumin to trigger inflammation; they were then treated with organic virgin coconut oil or mefenamic acid to measure which was the most effective.
According to the researchers, the rodents that had virgin coconut oil applied showed a lower level of inflammation than the rats treated with the mefenamic acid. In the randomized mouse group, the researchers said that the anti-inflammatory effects of virgin coconut oil were every bit as effective as aspirin.
There have been numerous other studies and research that indicate the anti-inflammatory effects of using virgin coconut oil. In a study published in Pharm Biology, organic coconut oil was found to act as a pain killer, as well as being effective at reducing inflammation.
