(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 07, 2014 ) Glasgow, UK -- Coconut oil has often played a role in Indonesian folk medicine. Traditionally, virgin coconut oil has been used alongside other natural methods to manage wounds, and studies have shown that virgin coconut oil is a useful aid in treating wounds.
A study published in a German medical journal set out to establish how effective coconut oil was at preserving the medicinal plants that are commonly used in Indonesian folk medicine and how effective coconut oil was at treating a wound.
The study looked at a small ethnic group on the Indonesian island of Flores. The group uses coconut oil to preserve medicinal herbs such as the seeds from the betel nut and the papaya fruit.
As part of the study, the researchers also investigated the group's use of coconut oil for treating wounds. Coconut oil is used because of its biochemical structure. Virgin coconut oil contains short chained fatty acids and saturated fatty acids.
The fatty acids contained in coconut oil prevent it from becoming rancid and they stop the oil from oxidising, which makes virgin coconut oil ideal for preserving the medicinal plants and for the treatment of wounds.
Other studies have shown that virgin coconut oil can indeed help to heal wounds much quicker. A study conducted by KG Nevin and T Rajamohan in 2010 showed that when virgin coconut oil was applied to the wounds of rats, their healing time was greatly accelerated.
It was found that the collagen turnover was quicker and that wounds with virgin coconut oil applied showed higher levels of antioxidants. The researchers attribute the healing power of coconut oil to the "cumulative effect of various biologically active minor components present in it."
