(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 21, 2014 ) Beaverton, Oregon -- Thousands of studies have been done around the question of weight loss. As millions battle the diet yoyo, losing weight consistently continues to be a challenge. The answer for many may simply lie in how many calories are eaten during the day.
Research is now pointing towards switching thinking from 'dieting' to 'healthy lifestyle'. And, while that healthier lifestyle includes loading up on fresh, organic vegetables and healthier recipes, new studies show, once again, that simply doing this does not increase weight loss.
Vegetables do take up more room in the stomach, which can decrease the tendency to eat carbohydrates and sugary foods. This can certainly help overall health as they provide much needed nutrients and fibre for the body to utilize during digestion.
But according to a recent study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, there are no 'free' foods and calories do count in overall weight loss.
"Across the board, all studies we reviewed showed a near-zero effect on weight loss," says lead author Kathryn Kaiser, PhD, instructor in the UAB School of Public Health.
"So I don't think eating more alone is necessarily an effective approach for weight loss because just adding them on top of whatever foods a person may be eating is not likely to cause weight change."
"It's time to start looking at our lifestyle, including our level of activity and how we create our meals, in a completely different way." says Victoria Playfair, from Savi Wellness. "A new way of looking at the food we put on our plates may sound easy but in reality, our industrialized nation has a lot to learn. We do have a tendency to super-size everything. Weight issues have spun out of control. "
"The bad news is, exercise to expend calories is necessary for weight loss. The good news is.....exercise to expend calories is necessary for weight loss. We need come to grips with the fact that there is no real 'couch potato diet'. We have to move our bodies in order for them to stay healthy. If adding exercise is crucial to your weight loss efforts, then there is huge benefit in that."
The key factor to making changes is to focus on adding in, not taking away. Adding in 20 minutes of exercise every other day is an easy way to start. This will begin the process of calorie burn that is so necessary for weight loss and seems like a good place to start.
