(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 09, 2014 ) Deerfield Beach, Florida -- A new study from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, published in the Journal Of Neuroscience Research, suggests that taking curcumin supplements may help to prevent Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's Disease is believed to be caused by the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain, which leads to the disruption and destruction of nerve cells. These plaques form when 'sticky' protein pieces called beta-amyloid clump together.
Previous studies have found that curcumin (an active component of turmeric root) can reduce amyloid pathology in Alzheimer's disease, and this study looked at how curcumin could reduce the toxicity of amyloid proteins in mice.
The study found that curcumin supplementation improved both the spatial learning and memory ability of the mice by preventing amyloid plaques from forming.
