Vitamin D Research Provides Fresh Hope For Asthma Sufferers

What is vitamin D

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 09, 2014 ) Hollywood, Florida -- In a recent study carried out in Iran, researchers have determined that vitamin D supplementation can increase the effectiveness of regular inhalers that are routinely given to those people who are living with Asthma. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in vitamin D, and researchers from all around the world are making a considerable amount of progress in terms of just how important the "Sunshine Vitamin" really is.

Often called the Sunshine Vitamin because it is produced naturally when skin is exposed to natural sunlight, vitamin D deficiency has already been linked to several health problems, including illnesses such as breast cancer; prostate cancer; Alzheimer's and etc. From cancer to infertility, vitamin D deficiency seems to be a key figure.

Although it is universally referred to as a vitamin, vitamin D is essentially a hormone rather than a vitamin. Unlike vitamins, it is not present in many foods, and those foods that do contain vitamin D, typically only have very small concentrations. Sunlight is the primary source, but fear of developing skin cancer has resulted in most people trying to avoid excessive sun exposure.

Iranian researchers have now found that vitamin D supplementation can ease breathing difficulties among asthma sufferers using inhalers. However, Professor Castro from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, has called for further investigation. "What the Iranians have established is wonderful news, but we need to keep in mind that while their research shows that vitamin D supplementation can increase the effectiveness of current medication, it hasn't shown whether or not it can actually lead to permanent improvements," said Professor Castro.

In recent years, there have been numerous studies done regarding the benefits or vitamin D, and the potential consequences of vitamin D deficiency. A major study in Italy has just recently shown that vitamin D can reduce infertility, while another recent study has shown a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and prostate cancer.

Vitamin D deficiency is something which is often overlooked by healthcare professionals, despite all the recent evidence showing just how crucial it is to one's overall health. "Because it is so readily available, most people just don't believe it is something to worry about. Many believe they'll be getting all the vitamin D they need if they spend a few minutes outdoors every day.

An ever growing number of people are calling on governments to increase their recommended daily allowances, arguing that current recommendations are outdated, and consequently causing widespread deficiency. "Some surveys suggest that up to 70% of the American population has a vitamin D deficiency, and it is our belief that most of those people are in fact getting more than the official recommended daily dose. There is now a considerable amount of evidence to support the argument that people should be getting far more vitamin D than they currently are," said Mr. Oliver Adams, a spokesman for Hollywood based Vitamin D.

With vitamin D deficiency increasing at an alarming pace, and a growing mountain of evidence to support its crucial role in one's overall health, millions of people are turning to supplement manufacturers for help. Today, vitamin D3 supplements are among the most popular of all dietary supplements on the market.
