Could Cancer Prevention Be Among The Medicinal Benefits Of Turmeric?

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 22, 2014 ) Deerfield Beach, Florida -- Curcumin, the active ingredient of the Asian spice turmeric, has been shown to slow the progression of a type of lung cancer called mesothelioma

A new study, by scientists from Case Western Reserve University and the Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt, Germany, and published in Clinical Cancer Research, has found that curcumin can increase the levels of a protein which inhibits the growth of this kind of cancer.

Malignant mesothelioma kills 43,000 people every year worldwide, and is particularly known as it is often found in people who have previously been exposed to asbestos, although it is possible to contract this kind of cancer with asbestos exposure.

Senior author Afshin Dowlati, MD, Professor of Medicine – Hematology/Oncology, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, said "Mesothelioma is a disease that continues to have a significant burden worldwide, and the treatment option is really suboptimal. We must find better ways to treat it. We now understand the mechanisms that drive cell proliferation and growth in malignant mesothelioma."

The medicinal benefits of turmeric have been researched and discussed for thousands of years, beginning with traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, and now continuing into modern scientific research such as this, and turmeric and curcumin supplements have become popular as a way of improving overall health and preventing illness.

This study, along with other recent scientific investigation into turmeric and curcumin, suggest that it may have a role in the treatment of certain cancers in the future. More work needs to be done, but work such as this paves the way for better understanding of mechanisms of cancer, and its treatment.
