Group Studies Reveal Link Beteen Low Levels Of Vitamin D And Schizophrenia

Understanding Vitamin D Deficiency and Low Vitamin D Levels

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 23, 2014 ) Hollywood, Florida -- Vitamin D first surprised the world nearly 100 years ago when researchers discovered that even small amounts of it could prevent Rickets, a devastating childhood disease than can cause severe and irreversible bone deformities. Prior to this discovery, doctors only knew that Rickets is caused when there is not enough calcium to support proper bone growth and bone development. However, even when kids were given calcium supplementation, it had no effect on this disease. Scientists later discovered that vitamin D deficiency prevents the body from being able to absorb calcium from one's diet.

Ironically, very little vitamin D research took place following this discovery, but the past decade and a half has seen a renewed interest in vitamin D, often referred to as the "Sunshine Vitamin." Essentially a hormone, vitamin D is produced in the body when skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays. Despite this fact, the vast majority of people are known to have a vitamin D deficiency.

In warm sunny climates, people are inclined to cover their skin when they are outdoors, largely due to concerns about developing skin cancer. Others cover themselves for religious and/or cultural reasons, while others cover up because they want to avoid having a dark skin. In colder climates which dominate the northern hemisphere, most people simply don't have the opportunity to spend enough time in the sun. Now many doctors are warning that they have even found low vitamin D readings among surfers and lifeguards who spend most of their time in the sun.

In recent years, researchers have started finding an ever increasing amount of evidence that shows vitamin D deficiency is linked to many serious illnesses, including diseases like prostate cancer; breast cancer; Alzheimer's and etc. In one of the most recent studies published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers analyzed 19 separate studies, involving nearly 3,000 individuals. During this study, it was found that people with low levels of vitamin D are twice as likely to develop Schizophrenia in later life.

Alarmingly, they have also found that of all the Schizophrenia patients tested, 65% were vitamin D deficient. "Quite frankly, we were shocked when we discovered that a vitamin D deficiency can more than double the risk of developing Schizophrenia," said Professor Esmaillzadeh, a coinvestigator of the study. "We are seeing similar studies being done all around the world, and the results make it quite clear that vitamin D deficiency is a global issue which really should be addressed," he later commented.

Nutra Mina, a Hollywood based vitamin D3 supplement specialist was also quick to comment: "What we are seeing here is a silent vitamin D deficiency epidemic. Far too many people simply take it for granted that they are getting all the vitamin D they need, either from spending time in the sun, or from the foods they eat," said their spokesman, Mr. Oliver Adams.

"We believe more should be done to make people aware of the fact that it is virtually impossible to maintain adequate vitamin D levels through diet alone, and as most of us already know, very few people want to spend long periods of time in the sun because they are afraid of getting skin cancer. We get people asking us how they could possibly have a vitamin D deficiency if they spend most weekends on the beach. The truth is that most of them use sunscreen lotions, and even cheap lotions can reduce vitamin D production by up to 95%," said Mr. Adams.
