More Than 300,000 Children Suffer From Arthritis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 12, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- Arthritis is a condition has been linked to both aging and obesity. Obese people place more strain on their joints, making them more susceptible to damage. Those in the aging population are also susceptible to arthritis due to the wear and tear in the joint cartilage from decades of use. However, it seems that it is not only the obese and the elderly who are susceptible to the condition.

According to studies, there are more than 300,000 children in the United States who are suffering from arthritis. There are many types of arthritis and those that affect children are different from rheumatoid arthritis experienced by adults. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis or JIA is one form of arthritis that affects thousands of young Americans today.

"JIA is a very prevalent form of arthritis in kids. As a matter of fact, it affects around 50,000 children in the United States," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Juvenile arthritis is diagnosed when arthritic symptoms develop in children who are 16 years old and younger. JIA is often diagnosed when the sufferer experiences swelling in the joints for at least six weeks. Other symptoms include joint pain, difficulty moving, swelling, and redness.

Studies suggest that JIA is an autoimmune disease. It is believed that, white blood cells are unable to tell the difference between healthy cells and unhealthy ones, such as viruses and bacteria. The immune system releases chemicals to protect the body, but also damages healthy tissues causing pain and inflammation.

Arthritis is a very complicated condition because it affects the muscles, bones, cartilage, joints and other connective tissues. For arthritis in children, experts believe that controlling the symptoms, preventing joint damage and maintaining function are the important parts of overall treatment.

"Children should be running around, playing sports and doing all the things that kids do. When a child is suffering from so much pain that they can barely walk, a parent wants to do everything in their power to help them," added O'Sullivan.

In an attempt to improve the condition of their children, many parents resort to natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements. With the FDA issuing a warning against the long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs that are commonly used to treat arthritic symptoms, many believe that such supplements are a safer long-term solution.

Many health experts recommend the use of natural alternatives for young children. However, they also emphasize that, if parents are looking at glucosamine as an option for their child, they should take precautions in choosing a brand with high quality ingredients from an FDA approved facility (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
