Experts Believe Glucosamine Has Potential To Help Osteoarthritis Patients

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 02, 2015 ) Portland, Oregon -- Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that causes patients to suffer from stiffness and joint pain. It typically affects the joints in the thumbs, neck, ends of the fingers, hips, and knees. Surveys from the National Arthritis Data Workgroup showed more than 27 million individuals in the United States suffer from doctor-diagnosed osteoarthritis.

Due to the high prevalence of the disease, more health experts and scientists are conducting clinical trials to discover an effective, long-term treatment. A definitive treatment is still not available, but several natural alternatives have already been identified as having potential applications in joint health.

While further studies are needed, some suggest that glucosamine supplements may provide joint health benefits. Glucosamine is a naturally-occurring substance in the body. However, as a person ages the glucosamine levels start to decrease. Joint pain, inflammation and stiffness are believed to be the result of these reduced amounts of glucosamine in the body.

"Glucosamine is important in the body to help provide cushioning and stability in the joints during movements. It is also believed to be involved in the retention of water needed in the cartilage tissue to maintain its health," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

There are also other known causes of osteoarthritis and other arthritic conditions, such as a genetic predisposition to the disease. The most common cause of the condition is normal wear and tear in the joints, which usually happens as a person ages.

Experts suggest that those who are not yet suffering from the condition or want to manage it should take measures to increase their protection from the disease. The Arthritis Foundation suggests regular exercise as the best defense. Glucosamine supplements are also regularly used by osteoarthritis sufferers to help manage their pain and stiffness.

While osteoarthritis is still a long way from being cured, many sufferers who use glucosamine supplements claim that they have experienced some significant improvements while using the natural alternative (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
